Impeachment Project
NLG Impeachment Project Overview
The Detroit & Michigan Chapter
of the National Lawyers Guild worked with community
organizations to hold teach-ins to build support for
the impeachment of George W. Bush.
The Guild continues to organize against the Bush Administration's
policies. The NLG hosted Bill Goodman, Legal
Director of the Center for Constitutional Rights,
to speak on the Military Commissions Act, March 5.
If you would like to work on other educational events,
rallies, and information distribution, please contact
the NLG office.

One
of the goals of the Impeachment Project is to enable
activists and lawyers to approach their communities,
councils, boards, unions or other bodies, to press
for impeachment resolutions. If you would like
a Guild attorney to assist with preparation, presentations
or a meeting with your local representative, please

Local
Efforts
The NLG participated in the
National Day of Teach-Ins on July 19, 2006.
Julie Hurwitz presented information regarding the
Bush Administration's impeachable offenses.
Approximately 100 community members then broke out
into smaller constitutency groups to plan future actions.
At the June 28,
2006 Impeachment forum, Buck Davis, Douglas Mullkoff,
and Julie Hurwitz outlined the legal foundation for
a campaign to impeach George W. Bush. Representatives
from several community organizations (Green Party,
Grey Panthers, Michigan Welfare Rights Org., Veterans
for Peace, World Can't Wait, among others, along with
the National Lawyers Guild) then discussed strategies
to build support for impeachment. Several participants
subsequently worked with the Guild to plan a Teach-In
on July 19th, the National Day of Impeachment Teach-Ins.
Over 50 people attended the Teach-In; the group was
diverse in terms of race, age, organizational affiliation,
and political perspective. After viewing "How
to Impeach a President" and a brief lecture given
by Julie Hurwitz, participants gathered in small working
groups. These groups discussed the Articles
of Impeachment in more detail and created plans
for action.

Seeking to choke off a
Republican rallying cry, the House's top Democrat has told colleagues
that the party will not seek to impeach President Bush even if it
gains control of the House in November's elections, her office said
last night.
